Growing Up in Real Estate: Lessons I Learned from the Office Floor

How a childhood spent around contracts, closings, and clients shaped a lifelong career in real estate.

For most people, their introduction to real estate happens when they’re ready to buy or sell a home. For me, it started much earlier—before I could even tie my own shoes.

Some kids grow up in playgrounds. I grew up in a real estate office.

My father ran a busy real estate brokerage in Maryland, and many of the agents were like extended family. When I wasn’t at school, I was tagging along at open houses, riding shotgun on property tours, or learning negotiation tactics at the copy machine. While other kids were learning the rules of basketball, I was learning the rhythm of market cycles and how to truly listen to a client’s needs.

This wasn’t just exposure—it was a foundation.

Over the years, I watched deals come together, fall apart, and come back stronger. I saw firsthand how hard work, communication, and integrity shaped the success of not just my dad’s business, but the lives of the families he served. That legacy is what led me to pursue real estate full-time, and why I’ve never looked back.

Fast forward to today: I’ve been fortunate to help hundreds of people buy and sell homes across Greenville, SC, and the surrounding Upstate communities. I’ve also personally bought and sold more than 100 investment properties and lived through four personal home sales of my own. I’ve been in your shoes—nervous about making an offer, unsure how to price a listing, excited, uncertain, and everything in between.

Those early lessons? They stuck. Here are a few I still live by:

  • Real estate is about people, not just property. Behind every deal is a family, a story, and a dream.
  • Experience is a powerful tool. It helps you see what others don’t—and protect your clients from what they can’t yet imagine.
  • Relationships matter most. Some of my greatest business wins have come from simple acts of trust, listening, and follow-through.
